27 November, S3 Campus Reporter, 9.00-12.00
Friday 27 November, 9.00-12.00 (approx 8-10 volunteers required)
S3 ' Campus Reporter' campus based event
Broughton High School at Edinburgh University
After a short ice-breaker activity we split into small teams and set the scene. The pupils are to act as researchers and reporters and will produce a short 'TV News Show' by the end of the event assisted by you, the LEAPS team and a small easy-to-use video camera.
Each team is tasked with gathering general background info on the university as they explore the campus with you but they also have a second task which involves them working on a specific 'angle' or news item, eg. 'the role of the Students' Association' or 'The Study Environment'. Each group has a different 'angle' to report on and they use the video camera to record interviews and footage around campus which will be included in the final 'news show'.
After a short break in the student union the pupils return to the base room which is set up like a TV Studio - if you have a good sense of imagination! The news show is then 'broadcast' with 2 pupils acting as the TV presenters who introduce each of the clips created by each of the news teams.
Because this particular event takes places at Edinburgh University it is open to Edinburgh University students or anyone who is familiar with the George Square area of Edinburgh University.
The meet up time is 9am at the 'base room' (TBC - room in George Sq area) and you will be finished by 12noon. If you are interested in signing up for this workshop please drop me an email - claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk.

23 November, S5 workshop, Newbattle HS, 1.40-2.35
Monday 23 November, 1.40-2.35 (this workshop is now full - thanks!)
S5 'Typical Student Week' workshop
Newbattle HS, Midlothian
For the S5 workshop you will be working with a small group of S5 pupils (15-16 year olds). The pupils have to find out as much as they can about your typical week at university and plot activities on a weekly planner. They compare your typical week with their own school timetable and also get the chance to find how your 'typical student week' compares with other student volunteers studying different subjects at different universities. For this exercise it is best if you can tell the group about your first year at university but if you can't remember that in much detail then your current timetable will do nicely.
If you are interested in signing up for this workshop please drop me an email claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk and let me know if would like transport to the school. The meeting time for this workshop is 12.50 at the LEAPS office and we'll make sure you are dropped back there after the workshop about 3ish. If you would rather make your own way there we are happy to meet you at the school office at 1.30pm - just let me know please.
James and Claire are leading this workshop and acting as taxi drivers.

16 November, S5 workshop, WHEC, 9.50-10.45
Monday 16 November, 9.50-10.45 (this one is now full - thanks!)
S5 'Typical Student Week' workshop
Wester Hailes Education Centre, Edinburgh
The meeting time for this workshop is 9.00am at the LEAPS office and we'll make sure you are dropped back there after the workshop about 11.15ish. If you would rather make your own way there we are happy to meet you at the school office at 9.40am - just let me know please.

11 November, S6 workshop, Liberton HS, 1.30-2.30
Wednesday 11 November, 1.30-2.30 (this workshop is now full - thanks!)
S6 'Getting by on Student Budget' workshop
Liberton HS, Edinburgh
During the S6 workshop you will be working with a small group of S6 pupils (16-17 year olds) on a student case study. We have compiled a number of case studies following feedback form existing and previous volunteers and you will be able to choose what case study you want to work with at the start of the workshop.
The pupils in your group have to discuss the case study and work out, with the aid of a calculator, what the 'case study student' expenditure is for a typical week at university and also what income they have available to them during the academic year to pay for their student lifestyle. Your role is to make sure the group is working together, discussing the case study and reaching agreement before writing down their answers. More importantly, we would also like
you to share with your pupils your own experiences of getting by on a student budget.
If you are interested in signing up for this workshop please drop me an email claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk and let me know if would like transport to the school.
The meeting time for this workshop is 1pm at the LEAPS office and we'll make sure you are dropped back there after the workshop about 2.50ish. If you would rather make your own way there we are happy to meet you at the school office at 1.20pm - just let me know please.

2 November, S4 workshop, Forrester HS, 8.40-9.40
Monday 2 November, 8.40-9.40 (this workshop is now full - thanks!)
S4 ‘Courses, Qualifications & Careers’
Forrester High School, Edinburgh
This is the fast moving quiz style workshop where you assist a group of S4 pupils (14-15 year olds) with the various rounds of the quiz including the very competitive ‘University Course – true or false’ and the popular ‘spot the student’ round. Your job is to encourage the pupils to discuss the questions and reach agreement as a group. The workshop also often stimulates other questions from pupils related to university life.
If you are interested in signing up for this workshop please drop me an email claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk and let me know if you would like transport to the school. The meeting time for this workshop is 8am at the LEAPS office and we’ll make sure you are dropped back there after the workshop about 10am. We can also do a pick-up/drop off at Heriot Watt Uni if required.
If you would rather make your own way there we are happy to meet you at the school office at 8.30am – just let me know please.
James will be leading this workshop and will also be acting as taxi driver.

LEAPS VOLUNTEERING IN 2009-2010!
Hi all
If you are one of our existing volunteers - welcome back! It's lovely to have you back in the fold again this year. Hope you enjoyed your holibags! If you are new to LEAPS and hoping to get involved in our volunteer opportunties this year - hello and welcome!
Our workshops in schools will be starting up again on 2 Nov and will continue up until the end of May. I will be posting the November events here soon so please keep your eyes peeled.
If you are new to LEAPS and would like to find out more about our volunteering opportunties please pop me an email and I can send you more information.
The next step will be for you to attend one of our 'Information and Training Sessions'. You can attend any of the sessions regardless of what university you study at.
Thur 15 Oct, 5.30-7.30 - Edinburgh Uni - David Hume Tower (Faculty Room North)
Wed 21 Oct, 5.30-7.30 - Edinburgh Uni - David Hume Tower (Conference Room)
Thur 22 Oct, 5.30-7.30 - Napier Uni - Merchiston Campus (Room F28)
Mon 26 Oct, 5.30-7.30 - Heriot Watt Uni - (Room DB115)
Tues 27 Oct, 5.30-7.30 - Queen Margaret Uni (Room TBC)
These sessions give a good insight into what volunteering involves. We ask a few current volunteers along to share their experiences and we also provide you with all the necessary training that you need before you attend any events in school. After the training session it's up to you if you want to get involved. Absolutely no arm twisting - we promise!
Please email me - claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk - to register your interest and book your place on one of the Information and Training Sessions.
The LEAPS team looks forward to meeting some new and some more familiar faces very soon!
Enjoy the start of term
