BIG THANK YOU TO THE VOLUNTEERS OF 2009!
On behalf of the whole LEAPS team I would just like to say a massive thank you to all of you who volunteered for us this year.
It has been a record breaking year! With your help we delivered 84 workshops and events to a total of 2622 school pupils across Edinburgh and the Lothians. As a group you collectively volunteered 435 times which I believe is the highest number in the history of LEAPS!
Thank you once again for all your efforts and enthusiasm in workshops this year. We have enjoyed working with you all. And if you have just completed your fourth year and also volunteered in previous years - a special thank you for your contribution. I think some long-service medals are definitely merited ! (not mentioning any names - Mary Ho!)
Have a great holiday and all the best with future plans if you are about to graduate.
Keep in touch and remember if you did volunteer quite a bit for LEAPS we would be able and more than happy to provide you with a reference for any jobs/further study you apply for. Just drop me an email - claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk to let me know the details.
For all of you in 3rd year or below who are returning to university in September we would love to see you again next term. Workshops will start in November. Rest assured you'll be receiving an email from me at some point!
All the best everyone. Have a great holiday!
The LEAPS team
MAY IS 'BADGE AMNESTY' MONTH!
It has come to our attention that a number of our much loved and treasured 'LEAPS badges' have escaped from the confines of the LEAPS Office. This is mainly due to gross incompetence on the part of the LEAPS Co-ordinator and other staff delivering workshops in schools (their names have been omitted to protect the innocent).
As part of credit-crunching measures the LEAPS Business Manager has stated publicly that if LEAPS does not recover sufficient numbers of said badges (retail price £5.00) LEAPS jobs are on the line and even worse volunteers may have to be 'badge-less' for all future workshops.
In light of this frightening situation we see no alternative but to that make May our 'Badge Amnesty' month.
You should be aware that these badges can be highly dangerous if they fall into the hands of individuals who are not trained in their usage. These badges have been known to render credit cards completely useless and can be incredibly problematic for pacemaker wearers. In addition, the inexperienced wearer can be subject to excruciating cold pains if they choose to wear their LEAPS badge in direct contact with the skin.
If for any reason a badge matching the 'photofit' (pictured on right - you might have one with another university name!) has come into your possession please return it to the LEAPS office by posting it or by depositing it in person in the appropriate clear box in the LEAPS office.
No questions will be asked as to how you acquired said badge and you will suffer no incrimination as a result. However, you may if you wish wear a disguise to protect your identity if depositing your badge in person at the LEAPS office.
There is no reward for the safe return of these items but you should rest assured that by returning these potential deadly weapons you are helping us fight a much needed war against badge-related crime.
Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.
Yours,
PC Aitchison

Thursday 21 May, 9.15-12 OR 9.45-11 (This one is now full - thanks!)
S3 ‘Junior Reporter Event’ campus event
Deans Community HS at Edinburgh University
This is the very exciting, half day campus based event where you accompany small groups of pupils around the university. As this one is based at Edinburgh University the event is open to all volunteers from Edinburgh University OR those who are familiar with the George Square area.
You can either come along for the whole event from 9.15-12noon or if you don’t have so much time to spare it would be really helpful if you could come from 9.45-11 when you’ll accompany a small group around the campus In both cases, the meeting place is Seminar Room 4 in the Chrystal Macmillan Building.
If you are interested in taking part please drop Claire an email at claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk and let her know if you are coming 9.15-12 or 9.45-11am.
The format of the event is as follows;
After the usual ice breaking activity we split the pupils into small teams and set the scene. They are to act as researchers and reporters and will produce a short ‘TV news show’ by the end of the event assisted by you and the LEAPS staff.
Each ‘news team’, is tasked with gathering general background info on the university as they explore the campus with you but they also have a second task which involves them working on a specific ‘angle’ or news item, e.g. ‘The role of the Student Association’ or ‘The Study Environment’. Each group has a different ‘angle’ to report on and they use the video camera to record interviews and footage around campus which will be included in the final ‘news show’.
After a short break at Potter Row union the pupils return to the base room which is set up like up like a TV studio - if you use your imagination! The news show is then ‘broadcast’ with 2 pupils acting as the TV presenters who introduce each of the clips created by each of the news teams.

1 April, S4 workshop, Newbattle HS, 1.40-2.35........NEW!!!
Wednesday 1 April, 1.40-2.35 (This workshop is now full - thanks!)
‘Courses, Qualifications & Careers’ S4 workshop
Newbattle High School, Dalkeith, Midlothian
This is a re-arranged workshop. It should have taken place earlier in the month. We would like to take around 5 or 6 volunteers along to this one.
This is the fast moving quiz style workshop where you assist a group of S4 pupils (14-15 year olds) with the various rounds of the quiz including the very competitive ‘University Course – true or false’ and the popular ‘spot the student’ round. Your job is to encourage the pupils to discuss the questions and reach agreement as a group. The workshop also often stimulates other questions from pupils related to university life.
If you are interested in signing up for this workshop please drop James an email mailto:claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk and let me know if you would like transport to the school. The meeting time for this workshop is 1pm at the LEAPS office and we’ll make sure you are dropped back there after the workshop about 3ish.
If you would rather make your own way there we are happy to meet you at the school office at 1.30 – just let me know.
Claire and James will be leading this workshop and so far the following volunteers have signed up for this one;

30 March, S5 workshop, Musselburgh Grammar, 9.50-10.50........NEW!!!!
Monday 30 March, 9.50-10.50 (10-12 volunteers required!!!)
‘Typical Student Week’ S5 workshop
Musselburgh Grammar, Musselburgh, East Lothian
This is a re-arranged date for this workshop. It was meant to take place earlier in the month. Anyway, we have 2 groups of 40 pupils on this date/time so we are looking for as many volunteers as possible to help out with this one. Pretty please!
For the S5 workshop you will be working with a small group of S5 pupils (15-16 year olds). The pupils have to find out as much as they can about your typical week at university and plot your activities on a weekly planer. They also calculate how many hours you spend on each activity per week. For this exercise it is best if you can tell the group about your first year at university but if you can’t remember that in much detail then your current timetable will do nicely.
If you are interested in signing up for this workshop please drop Claire an claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk and let me know if you would like transport to the school. The meeting time for this workshop is 9.05 at the LEAPS office and we’ll drop you back there after the workshop about 11.20. If you would rather make your own way there we are happy to meet you at the school office at 9.40 – just let me know please.
Similiarly for those volunteers based at Queen Margaret we could pick you up on the way to the school. Just pop me an email please and we can arrange a suitable time.
Claire and James will be leading this workshop and so far the following volunteers have signed up;
Jay H
Lucy C
Rosie W
Stewart A (making own way to school)

Musselburgh Grammar, Musselburgh, East Lothian
This is a re-arranged date for this workshop. It was meant to take place earlier in the month. Anyway, we have 2 groups of 40 pupils on this date/time so we are looking for as many volunteers as possible to help out with this one. Pretty please!

Summer School Personal Tutors
A number of volunteers have been in touch with questions about Personal Tutor posts on this year's LEAPS Summer School. Here therefore is a quick summary of what the posts involve...
You might not have heard of Summer School before so here's a quick flavour of what it's all about. Personal Tutors are primarily involved in supporting the Learning Skills course each Wednesday.
As a Personal Tutor you would support a group of around 10 school leavers, all of whom are holding offers for university and looking to gain a bit more experience. Your role would involve:
You might not have heard of Summer School before so here's a quick flavour of what it's all about. Personal Tutors are primarily involved in supporting the Learning Skills course each Wednesday.
As a Personal Tutor you would support a group of around 10 school leavers, all of whom are holding offers for university and looking to gain a bit more experience. Your role would involve:
- attending lectures alongside your students on themes such as academic writing, referencing, discussion skills and research
- leading tutorials on these and similar themes
- offering advice on the completion of course work
- helping to organise social events for students
Summer School runs for 8 weeks during June and July (from Tuesday 9 June to Friday 31 July) and you need to be available every Monday evening and all day Wednesday, plus a few other dates.
These posts are completely separate to our work with schools and, unlike workshops, we only have a few places available so unfortunately we can't accommodate everyone who would like to get involved. These are paid posts.
If you like the sound of the Personal Tutor role, e-mail me at James.Lamb@ed.ac.uk and I'll send you further information. The deadline for applications is 27 March.

26 March, S3 Junior Reporter, Heriot Watt Uni, 9-12 OR 10-11.15 NEW!!!!!
Thursday 26 March, 10.00-11.15 or 9-12 (6-8 volunteers required)
S3 ‘Junior Reporter Event’ campus event
Ross HS at Heriot Watt University
This is the recently updated S3 ’Student for a Day’ event using hand held video cameras (RIP - our trusty little Polaroid cameras!).
After a short break the pupils return to the base room which is set up like up like a TV studio - if you use your imagination! The news show is then ‘broadcast’ with 2 pupils acting as the TV presenters who introduce each of the clips created by each of the news teams.
Because of the nature of the event this one is open to all Heriot Watt University students OR those who are familiar with the campus at Riccarton.
You have 2 options for this event. You can come along to the whole event if you can spare the time. It takes place from 9-12noon and the meet up time is 9am in Room NS 302.
Alternatively, if you don't have too much time on your hands you can come along for just over an hour and assist us with taking the pupils around the campus from 10-11.15. The meet up time for this option is 10am in room NS 302.
If you are interested in taking part please drop me an email on claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk and let me know if you would like to come from 9-12noon of from 10-11.15. Thanks!

Monday 23 March, 1.35-2.30 (5-6 volunteers required)
‘Getting by on a Student Budget’ S6 workshop
Gracemount High School, Edinburgh
During the S6 workshop you will be working with a small group of S6 pupils (16-17 year olds) on a student case study. We have compiled a number of case studies following feedback from existing & previous volunteers and you will be able to choose what case study you want to work on with your group before the start of the workshop. You may want to choose a case study that most closely matches your own circumstances. In any case we provide you with the answers so it’s very straightforward.
The pupils in your group have to discuss the case study and work out, with the aid of a calculator, what the ‘case study student’ expenditure is for a typical week at university and also what income they have available to them during their academic year to pay for their student lifestyle. Your role is to make sure the group is working together, discussing the case study and reaching agreement before writing down their answers. More importantly, we would also like you to share with your pupils your own experiences of getting by on a student budget.
If you are interested in signing up for this workshop please drop James an email mailto:claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk and let me know if you would like transport to the school. The meeting time for this workshop is 1am at the LEAPS office and we’ll make sure you are dropped back there after the workshop about 3ish.

If you would rather make your own way there we are happy to meet you at the school office at 1.25ish – just let me know please.

19 March, S3 'Junior Reporter', Heriot Watt Uni, 9-12noon NEW!!!!!
Thursday 19 March, 9.30-12noon (6-8 volunteers required)
S3 ‘Junior Reporter Event’ campus event
Armadale at Heriot Watt University
This is the recently updated S3 ’Student for a Day’ event using hand held video cameras (RIP - our trusty little Polaroid cameras!).
The meet up time for this event is 9am at room NS 302 and you will be finished by 12noon. If you are interested in taking part please drop me an email on claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk
