11 December - S6 Conference, 9.15-12.30

Friday 11 Dec, S6 Conference, 9.15-12.30 (as many volunteers as possible needed!)

Our annual ‘Conference for S6 students’ will take place at Heriot Watt University this year. This event is open to all student volunteers, irrespective of where you study – in fact we would like as many volunteers as possible to take part from a wide range of universities and subject areas.

We are expecting similar pupil numbers to last year (around 250) attending the conference. Those who attend come from a number of schools in Edinburgh, Lothians and the Borders and will be able to attend short presentations by guest speakers and opt into a selection of workshops.

Your role as a volunteer could involve one or more of the following activities;

- mingle and chat informally with pupils as they arrive and during break
- take part in our standard ‘getting by on a student budget S6 workshop
- take part in a workshop focusing on how to survive moving away from home
- star on the ‘Student Panel’ answering questions posed by the audience

To take part you ideally need to be free between 9.15am and 12.30pm although if you are only available for part of that time it’s still worth letting me know as we would be glad of any help – it’s a big event so it’s all hands on deck!

The meet up point is the main reception at Heriot Watt at 9.15am.

The best way to get to Heriot Watt is by taking the number 25 Lothian bus from Princes Street (Lothian bus No 34 and 45 also go to Heriot Watt but it’s a less frequent service). If you present me with your bus ticket when you arrive at Heriot Watt I will refund you the cash.

Alternatively, we will also be able to offer a limited number of students a lift from Edinburgh Uni – we would be a leaving the LEAPS office at 8am. Let me know if you would like a place in one of our cars.

‘Getting by on a Student Budget’ S6 workshop

During the S6 workshop you will be working with a small group of S6 pupils (16-17 year olds) on a student case study. We have compiled a number of case studies following feedback from existing & previous volunteers and you will be able to choose what case study you want to work on with your group before the start of the workshop. You may want to choose a case study that most closely matches your own circumstances. In any case we provide you with the answers so it’s very straightforward.

The pupils in your group have to discuss the case study and work out, with the aid of a calculator, what the ‘case study student’ expenditure is for a typical week at university and also what income they have available to them during their academic year to pay for their student lifestyle. Your role is to make sure the group is working together, discussing the case study and reaching agreement before writing down their answers. More importantly, we would also like you to share with your pupils your own experiences of getting by on a student budget.

2 December, S3 Campus Reporter, 9.00-12.00

Castlebrae High School at Edinburgh University

After a short ice-breaker activity we split into small teams and set the scene. The pupils are to act as researchers and reporters and will produce a short 'TV News Show' by the end of the event assisted by you, the LEAPS team and a small easy-to-use video camera.

Each team is tasked with gathering general background info on the university as they explore the campus with you but they also have a second task which involves them working on a specific 'angle' or news item, eg. 'the role of the Students' Association' or 'The Study Environment'. Each group has a different 'angle' to report on and they use the video camera to record interviews and footage around campus which will be included in the final 'news show'.

After a short break in the student union the pupils return to the base room which is set up like a TV Studio - if you have a good sense of imagination! The news show is then 'broadcast' with 2 pupils acting as the TV presenters who introduce each of the clips created by each of the news teams.

As this particular event takes places at Edinburgh University it is open to Edinburgh University students or anyone who is familiar with the George Square area of Edinburgh University.

The meet up time is 9am at the 'Cabaret Bar' at the Pleasance at Edinburgh University. You'll get a full briefing before the school group arrives and you will be finished by 12noon.

We have compiled a number of case studies following feedback from existing & previous volunteers and you will be able to choose what case study you want to work on with your group before the start of the workshop. You may want to choose a case study that most closely matches your own circumstances. In any case we provide you with the answers so it’s very straightforward.

The pupils in your group have to discuss the case study and work out, with the aid of a calculator, what the ‘case study student’ expenditure is for a typical week at university and also what income they have available to them during their academic year to pay for their student lifestyle. Your role is to make sure the group is working together, discussing the case study and reaching agreement before writing down their answers. More importantly, we would also like you to share with your pupils your own experiences of getting by on a student budget.

The meeting time for this workshop is 12.30pm at the LEAPS office and we’ll make sure you are dropped back there after the workshop about 3ish.

During the S6 workshop you will be working with a small group of S6 pupils (16-17 year olds) on a student case study. S3 ' Campus Reporter' campus based event
Gracemount HS at Edinburgh University

After a short ice-breaker activity we split into small teams and set the scene. The pupils are to act as researchers and reporters and will produce a short 'TV News Show' by the end of the event assisted by you, the LEAPS team and a small easy-to-use video camera.

Each team is tasked with gathering general background info on the university as they explore the campus with you but they also have a second task which involves them working on a specific 'angle' or news item, eg. 'the role of the Students' Association' or 'The Study Environment'. Each group has a different 'angle' to report on and they use the video camera to record interviews and footage around campus which will be included in the final 'news show'.

After a short break in the student union the pupils return to the base room which is set up like a TV Studio - if you have a good sense of imagination! The news show is then 'broadcast' with 2 pupils acting as the TV presenters who introduce each of the clips created by each of the news teams.

Because this particular event takes places at Edinburgh University it is open to Edinburgh University students or anyone who is familiar with the George Square area of Edinburgh University.
