During the S6 workshop you will be working with a small group of S6 pupils (16-17 year olds) on a student case study. The pupils in your group have to discuss and work out with the aid of a calculator, what the case study student’s expenditure is for a typical week at university. They also have to discuss and figure out what income their case study student has available to them during the academic year to pay for their student lifestyle. Your role is to make sure the group is working together, discussing the case study and reaching agreement before writing down their answers. More importantly, we would also like you to share with your pupils your own experiences of getting by on a student budget.

This event is open to all volunteers but is particularly well suited to those volunteers who are familiar with Edinburgh University’s George Square area. The meeting place is Edinburgh University’s Minto House, Lecture Theatre No 1 (downstairs). You can come along to whole event from 9.00-12.00 or the first part from 9.00-11.00. Just decide on the day!

For a short description of the event please see below:

The S3 Campus Reporter event involves you showing a small group of pupils around the university campus while assisting them with their task which is to record a short 1 minute film clip, using hand-held video cameras about a topic connected to university and student life.

After a short break mid way through the event the pupils return to the ‘news room’ and we run the TV news show complete with star presenters from the school and featuring all their news clips. For many pupils it is there first time on a university campus and possible first time they have met a student so they generally love it!

Your role is to share your own experiences re university life and also help them find out everything they need to in order to film their short clip.

It’s dead easy and a lot of fun. Being familiar with Edinburgh is not absolutely essential as you will be accompanied round campus by a LEAPS member of staff and we also pair up volunteers where possible.

University of Edinburgh [but open to volunteers from all universities]

Our second Applying2012 event for S5s will take place at the University of Edinburgh this year and, like the others, is one of our highlights of the year.

As this is different to other LEAPS activities, this event is open to those who have the experience of participation in several workshops - three or more (this year or previously). We are looking for our volunteer team to cover a range of universities and subjects too. As ever, just email alice.c.smith@ed.ac.uk to sign up.

In previous years we have had around 250+ pupils attend the event and they come from schools from all over the region - Edinburgh, Lothians and the Forth Valley area.

Pupils who come along will attend short presentations by speakers, a workshop and the opportunity to speak to university reps at a mini-HE convention.

Your role as a volunteer could involve one or more of the following activities:

- the setting up of the venue
- the registration of arriving students
- welcoming students as they arrive
- mingle and chat informally with pupils as they arrive and during break- take part in a workshop focusing on ‘strategies for selecting the right course and making an effective application’
- help gather evaluation forms at the end of day
- possibly manning a catering stand!

You also get the honour of wearing a LEAPS volunteer T-Shirt!

The meet up point is the main foyer of Appleton Tower, where the team will meet you for a quick briefing session before the event kicks off. If you look closely, some of the pics on the blog to your right are from last year’s event…take a look!

For a short description of the event please see below:

The S3 Campus Reporter event involves you showing a small group of pupils around the university campus while assisting them with their task which is to record a short 1 minute film clip, using hand-held video cameras about a topic connected to university and student life.

After a short break mid way through the event the pupils return to the ‘news room’ and we run the TV news show complete with star presenters from the school and featuring all their news clips. For many pupils it is there first time on a university campus and possible first time they have met a student so they generally love it!

Your role is to share your own experiences re university life and also help them find out everything they need to in order to film their short clip.

It’s dead easy and a lot of fun. Being familiar with Edinburgh is not absolutely essential as you will be accompanied round campus by a LEAPS member of staff and we also pair up volunteers where possible.

Our annual Conference for S6 students will take place at Heriot Watt University this year and is one of our highlights of the year.

As this is different to other LEAPS activities, this event is open to those who have the experience of participation in several workshops - three or more (this year or previously). We are looking for our volunteer team to cover a range of universities and subjects too. As ever, just email alice.c.smith@ed.ac.uk to sign up.

In previous years we have had around 300 pupils attend the Conference and they come from schools from all over the region - Edinburgh, Lothians, the Scottish Borders and the Forth Valley area.

Pupils who come along will attend short presentations by guest speakers and opt into a selection of workshops. Your role as a volunteer could involve one or more of the following activities:- the setting up of the venue

- the registration of arriving students
- meeting students off the buses as they arrive
- mingle and chat informally with pupils as they arrive and during break- take part in a workshop focusing on ‘how to survive moving away from home’
- take part in the session on ‘strategies for academic success in higher education’

You also get the honour of wearing a LEAPS volunteer T-Shirt!

The meet up point is 9.00 at the main entrance of Heriot-Watt where James and the team will meet you.

The S3 Campus Reporter event involves you showing a small group of pupils around the university campus while assisting them with their task which is to record a short 1 minute film clip, using hand-held video cameras about a topic connected to university and student life.

After a short break mid way through the event the pupils return to the ‘news room’ and we run the TV news show complete with star presenters from the school and featuring all their news clips. For many pupils it is there first time on a university campus and possible first time they have met a student so they generally love it!

Your role is to share your own experiences re university life and also help them find out everything they need to in order to film their short clip.

It’s dead easy and a lot of fun. Being familiar with Edinburgh is not absolutely essential as you will be accompanied round campus by a LEAPS member of staff and we also pair up volunteers where possible.

This is for any LEAPS volunteer who is thinking about a career in teaching. It's an opportunity to hear about how to put in a good application and what it's like once training and the early years of a teaching career in Scotland. It's an informal session with speakers and the opportunity to ask questions.

Speakers will include:

- a lecturer who interviews, selects and trains PGDE students
- a current PGDE student
- a current Probationary teacher
- a teacher in the early years of their career

The S3 Campus Reporter event involves you showing a small group of pupils around the university campus while assisting them with their task which is to record a short 1 minute film clip, using hand-held video cameras about a topic connected to university and student life.

After a short break mid way through the event the pupils return to the ‘news room’ and we run the TV news show complete with star presenters from the school and featuring all their news clips. For many pupils it is there first time on a university campus and possible first time they have met a student so they generally love it!

Your role is to share your own experiences re university life and also help them find out everything they need to in order to film their short clip.

For the S5 workshop you will be working with a small group of S5 pupils (15-16 year olds). The pupils have to find out as much as they can about your typical week at university and plot your activities on a weekly planner. They also calculate how many hours you spend on each activity per week. For this exercise it is best if you can tell the group about your first year at university but if you can’t remember that in much detail then your current timetable will do nicely!

During the S6 workshop you will be working with a small group of S6 pupils (16-17 year olds) on a student case study. The pupils in your group have to discuss and work out with the aid of a calculator, what the case study student’s expenditure is for a typical week at university. They also have to discuss and figure out what income their case study student has available to them during the academic year to pay for their student lifestyle. Your role is to make sure the group is working together, discussing the case study and reaching agreement before writing down their answers. More importantly, we would also like you to share with your pupils your own experiences of getting by on a student budget.

After a short break mid way through the event the pupils return to the ‘news room’ and we run the TV news show complete with star presenters from the school and featuring all their news clips. For many pupils it is there first time on a university campus and possible first time they have met a student so they generally love it! Your role is to share your own experiences re university life and also help them find out everything they need to in order to film their short clip. It’s dead easy and a lot of fun. Being familiar with Edinburgh is not absolutely essential as you will be accompanied round campus by a LEAPS member of staff and we also pair up volunteers where possible. S6 ‘Getting by on a Student Budget’ Craigroyston High School, Edinburgh If you would like to sign up for this workshop please email me on claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk. For a summary of the S6 workshop please see below; During the S6 workshop you will be working with a small group of S6 pupils (16-17 year olds) on a student case study. The pupils in your group have to discuss and work out with the aid of a calculator, what the case study student’s expenditure is for a typical week at university. They also have to discuss and figure out what income their case study student has available to them during the academic year to pay for their student lifestyle. Your role is to make sure the group is working together, discussing the case study and reaching agreement before writing down their answers. More importantly, we would also like you to share with your pupils your own experiences of getting by on a student budget. Please just let me know if you would like to take us up on this offer.For a summary of the S5 workshop please see below;For the S5 workshop you will be working with a small group of S5 pupils (15-16 year olds). The pupils have to find out as much as they can about your typical week at university and plot your activities on a weekly planner. They also calculate how many hours you spend on each activity per week. For this exercise it is best if you can tell the group about your first year at university but if you can’t remember that in much detail then your current timetable will do nicely!
