THANKS to everyone who has expressed an interest in these posts. There has been lots of interest in only a small number of places therefore I have closed applications as of now (7 February). Those who have expressed an interest will hear from me this week.
I’m currently in the process of recruiting a handful of personal tutors to work on this year’s LEAPS Summer School. The role involves supporting a group of school-leavers as they prepare for university, including helping with the delivery of a learning skills programme.
This might be of interest if you’re:
- planning to spend the summer in Edinburgh
- going to be free on Wednesdays and for an hour on Monday afternoons
- in year 2-4 of undergraduate study
- doing well in your academic studies
Although this isn’t formal employment, Personal Tutors receive an honorarium for their contribution.
The dates you would need to be available are as follows:
- Tuesday 1 June or Wednesday 2 June, 10.00-16.00 for Training Day 1
- Thursday 3 June, 10.00-16.00 for Training Day 2
- Friday 4 June, 08.30-16.30 for Summer School Induction
- Wednesday 9 June between 09.00 and 16.00 and every Wednesday up to and including 21 July, for Learning Skills
- Monday 7 June between 16.00 and 17.00 and at the same time every Monday up to and including 19 July for Team Briefing Meetings
- Friday 23 July, 16.00-22.00 for Summer School Graduation and Student Awards Ceremony
Personal Tutors need to be able to display the following qualities
- be performing well in your studies
- believe in the value of higher education
- believe that university should be open to all those who have the necessary talent
- recognise the key role that learning skills play in effective study
- have a positive, outgoing personality
and Personal Tutors need to providence evidence of the following skills:
- effective oral and written communication skills
- good time management and punctuality
- ability to work within a team
- initiative and resourcefulness
We also require completion satisfactory completion of an advanced Disclosure Scotland check (to be completed by LEAPS) plus 2 references, one of which must be from a current academic referee.
I only have a few places available and the team needs to cover a range of different universities and subject areas. This means unfortunately I can’t accommodate everyone who is interested in the post.
