S3 ‘Junior Reporter Event’ campus event
Hawick High at Edinburgh University
This is the very exciting, half day campus based event where you accompany small groups of pupils around the university. As this one is based at Edinburgh University the event is open to all volunteers from Edinburgh University OR those who are familiar with the George Square area.
You can either come along for the whole event from 10.45-1.30 or if you don’t have so much time to spare it would be really helpful if you could come from 11.15-12.30 when you’ll accompany a small group around the campus. In both cases, the meeting place is Room S1 in the Psychology Building, George Square.
If you are interested in taking part please drop Claire an email at claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk and tell her if you want to do 10.45-1.30 or 11.15-12.30.
The format of the event is as follows;
After the usual ice breaking activity we split the pupils into small teams and set the scene. They are to act as researchers and reporters and will produce a short ‘TV news show’ by the end of the event assisted by you and the LEAPS staff.
Each ‘news team’, is tasked with gathering general background info on the university as they explore the campus with you but they also have a second task which involves them working on a specific ‘angle’ or news item, e.g. ‘The role of the Student Association’ or ‘The Study Environment’. Each group has a different ‘angle’ to report on and they use the video camera to record interviews and footage around campus which will be included in the final ‘news show’.
After a short break at Potter Row union the pupils return to the base room which is set up like up like a TV studio - if you use your imagination! The news show is then ‘broadcast’ with 2 pupils acting as the TV presenters who introduce each of the clips created by each of the news teams.
