Summer School Personal Tutors

A number of volunteers have been in touch with questions about Personal Tutor posts on this year's LEAPS Summer School. Here therefore is a quick summary of what the posts involve...

You might not have heard of Summer School before so here's a quick flavour of what it's all about. Personal Tutors are primarily involved in supporting the Learning Skills course each Wednesday.

As a Personal Tutor you would support a group of around 10 school leavers, all of whom are holding offers for university and looking to gain a bit more experience. Your role would involve:

  • attending lectures alongside your students on themes such as academic writing, referencing, discussion skills and research
  • leading tutorials on these and similar themes
  • offering advice on the completion of course work
  • helping to organise social events for students

Summer School runs for 8 weeks during June and July (from Tuesday 9 June to Friday 31 July) and you need to be available every Monday evening and all day Wednesday, plus a few other dates.

These posts are completely separate to our work with schools and, unlike workshops, we only have a few places available so unfortunately we can't accommodate everyone who would like to get involved. These are paid posts.

If you like the sound of the Personal Tutor role, e-mail me at James.Lamb@ed.ac.uk and I'll send you further information. The deadline for applications is 27 March.
