16 February - 'Conference for S5 Students', 1.00-4.00

‘Conference for S5 Students’ (as many volunteers as possible required !)
Monday 16 February, 1pm to 4pm

This is a half-day, campus-based event that will take place simultaneously at 4 universities in the city – Edinburgh, Heriot Watt, Napier and Queen Margaret.

The event has exactly the same format at each of the venues and aims to help S5 (15-16 year olds) pupils who are interested in higher education decide whether university if for them and will also offer advice and guidance on helping them prepare for Higher Education. Sessions will include;

- Effective Note Taking
- The Student Union and Social Opportunities at University
- Student Panel (Questions and Answer session)
- Improving your Exam preparation and performance
- Choosing the Right course and place to study

Based at your own university campus, your contribution could involve any of the following:

- meet and greet students and helping with registration of student on arrival
- talk informally with pupils about your course and study habits
- take part in a ‘Student Panel’ where pupils can ask any questions on student life
- take notes in ‘Effective note taking’ session as if in lecture & share notes with pupils
- Share your experiences with pupils on ‘exam preparation and performance’ at uni

Refreshments will be provided and the event should be good fun for all concerned. For those who took part in the S6 Student Conference in December, our February event is likely to have a similarly lively atmosphere.

The LEAPS staff will be running the event at Edinburgh Uni and our colleagues at our partner universities will be delivering the event on their own campus.

If you are based at a university other that Edinburgh you may well receive an email from the staff there who are also recruiting volunteers for the day. If doesn’t matter who you sign up with but if you get in touch with me I will simply pass your name/email address onto our colleagues at your university and they will be in touch with you directly.

Student Life Experience is scheduled to take place between 1pm and 4pm, we’re ideally looking for volunteers who can be around for the whole of the session (in fact if you can come along slightly early that would be helpful) but if you can only make it for part of the time it would still be great to see you. Just let me know what times you can do when you email me please.

To sign up for this event please email me (claire.aitchison@ed.ac.uk).

Shortly after you’ve signed up one of our contacts from your university (me in the case of Edinburgh Uni) will be in touch with additional breifing information re. the event.
